Happy Pride Month everyone!

Last year my plan was to watch more queer films and series during June but i kinda had a mental breakdown and wasn't able to lol. But this year i'm in a better condition and have some interesting works on my watchlist, so i can say with more confidence that i'm going to succeed this year!

This week I finished the Japanese BL "Our Dining Table". It's 10 episodes on Gagaoolala. It was truly a comfort watch. Series where found family and food play an important role. Loved it. It really moved me. I remember last summer i watched the Thai BL "Moonlight Chicken", which revolved around a restaurant and it was also a very nice comfort story. I realized i'm not in the right headspace for the psychosexual dramas i'm usually into. It's nice to watch something different for a change.

Currently watching:

- New Netflix K-drama "Our Unwritten Seoul".
I said in my review for Mr. Plankton that i rarely get interested in k-dramas nowadays but luckily there are exceptions like this drama. It's about the interconnected lives of twins, identity, growing up, surviving in capitalism, secrets, failure, workplace bullying etc. It also has some romance but it's not the main plot. Just the right amount relatable, deep, escapist, and funny.

Those two series have really made me think about my own life and living authentically as an adult. The BL is more about loneliness, family issues, and loss and the K-drama also touches on those as well as about social pressures and the life of an unemployed failure and an overachiever/burn-out.

Other stuff:

+ Interested to check out new Chinese BL "Moon and Dust".

+ Also the second season of J-GL "Ayaka is in love with Hiroko" will start airing on June 26th!

+ I decided I will continue the South-Korean lesbian dating reality ToGetHer since it's now legally watchable on Gagaoolala with proper subtitles. Still confused about the drama between the 2 contestant off camera, but i'm still interested to see what happens to the other contestants.

This week I hardly used tiktok and instead focused on my own projects. I've been doing a lot of writing and researching. I feel like I'm getting my creative groove back slowly.

I also started watching a few series:

Call Me by No Name (GL)
Japanese, 7+ episodes (airing), Gagaoolala

I've liked every Japanese GL I've watched. Overall j-dramas usually have that delicate and angsty slice-of-life vibe I really like. So this was obviously my first on the watchlist when I heard there was a new Japanese GL. The relationship in this drama has the tropes of first love and moving in together immediately. It's obsessive, weird, mysterious. I really like it. I think I will post a full review once the season is finished.

XO, Kitty
American, 2 seasons, Netflix

Perfect series for a kpop fan. I didn't know this was part of the To All The Boys I've Loved Before - world.
I haven't watched an American teen show for a long time(I think Never have I ever is the last one), but nowadays they're more diverse and have more interesting concepts I can relive my teenage years while watching them :D I watch so much serious and dark stuff I had been looking for something fun to watch for a long time and this was a perfect series for it. I felt like a teengirl watching this series it's so cute. This was the first series I've bingewatched for a long time.

Ofc I have thousand other series on my watchlist. There's so many new Thai GLs, I haven't even checked the new Freenbecky series and film yet... or Petrichor. I think next I'm gonna finish the BL  the Heart Killers since I've already watched half of it and it's really entertaining.

From Thai GL's i'm definitely gonna tune into the mafia(The Dragon House) and prison(Clairbell) ones. They are my favorite BL genres as well, and I loved Orange is the new black and mafia films. They are such masculine genres I'm really excited that there are women-centric versions as well.

Next I'm gonna start watching S2 of Fragrance of the First Flower (Taiwanese GL). I really liked the first season.

'
I also started watching another survival show: &AUDITION where &TEAM was formed. I'm so glad some people who were eliminated on i-land were able to debut on this team. The survival show is not as brutal and the style of it is a bit different, more like a documentary, I think it's primarly made for a Japanese audience. I've been listening to &team discography for the past few weeks and really enjoy their music. I still don't have a bias but at the moment I'm most drawn to Harua because he is so cute.

On Kpop news, I'm really excited for Le sserafim's and Seulgi's combacks next month!

The trailer for Le sserafim's HOT is amazing I got emotional watching it:

I'm so obsessed with Chaewon's outfit she looks so cool and sexy😳

Hyunjin was live on ig yesterday and showed his very aesthetic room.
This is the vibe I want in my life:

I only recently found out about Fandom Trumps Hate. I'm not participating as a writer (i can barely write my own fics), but there are many kpop ships i'm thinking about bidding on. The money goes to charities and i feel like this is something really important that is needed now.

I recently finished two Japanese GL's.

Hoshikuzu Telepath

This was so cute ;_; I liked this better than the anime and it got me into AKB48 and obsessed with Itomomo.
I love how it portrays friendship between girls. The protagonist Umika is perfect representation for shy but ambitious girls.
This was my comfort watch during the summer and I think I will revisit this series.

Ayaka is in love with Hiroko

Comedy romance with an office setting that also deals with homophobia. It was a really fun watch and it felt like it was truly about the lesbian experience which I really appreciate.

One of the main leads is played by Shiho Kato who has been a member of Hinatazaka46 which is a funny coincidence that all 3 Japanese GLs I've watched has a jpop idol in them.

Both of these dramas are based on mangas which I will also be reading~

I got this challenge from twitter. I haven't read GL in a while so I thought it would be fun to participate in this as my tbr grows larger and larger.
The works I chose:
  • A Classic: Shiroi Heya No Futari: Short boarding school yuri with a beautiful old school shojo art style
  • A Manwha: Lily of the Valley: This is by Rangari who also did the famous Bad Thinking Diary. I've heard mixed reviews of this one but I'm still gonna check it because I like the art style. Like BTD it's also apparently smut heavy
  • Manhua: Keep an Eye on You: I've only read one gl manhua (I'm more dangerous than you) and this seemed interesting in the similar way that it seems like a toxic/crime story as well
  • A genre I barely read: Hoshikuzu Telepath: I've watched both the anime and live action of this and so this has been on my tbr for long. I also chose this because it's a school setting which is a genre I don't really read
  • Someone's recommendation: Love Thy Neighbor: twitter mutual recommended this to me and this is also a sexy and toxic story so it's right up my alley
  • Drama: She loves to cook, she loves to eat: I've only heard good things about this drama and I really love romance surrounding cooking so I believe this will be a comfy watch. I will also be continue to watch new thai gls.

Love Senior

Cute college GL! It has the senior-junior relationship that's common in yuri. This is my first Thai GL and I'm excited for all the works that are coming in 2024!

Pit Babe

I picked this up because it's the first omegaverse tv show! It centers around car racing (not something I'm super into) between an alpha x alpha couple. There's a lot of drama going on in this show.

Chaser Game W

My new favorite GL! This one is Japanese. It's an friends to enemies to lovers between a boss and an employee who are former lovers. I love their dynamic so much and the actresses are so beautiful!

My Name

I picked this up because it has two things I love: Han So Hee and female revenge.

Cherry Magic

I'm so glad Cherry Magic got an anime! I've seen the Japanese BL version of it but I'm actually enjoying this anime even more!
Office dramas might be my new favorite genre.

haitangkitty: (Default)

As I mentioned previosly, this anime would normally be too cute and slice-of-life to my taste but still I found myself watching every episode. It's such a comfort series.

Lately I've become more interested in female-centric stories and they make me feel so comfortable like I'm healing my inner little girl. The character design of the main pair is super cute. This anime also had focus on female friendship. The protagonist is super shy and throughout the story she has to overcome her shyness. It's an anime about belonging and pursuing dreams. I love how it shows failure and how it isn't the end of everything and you have to pursue your dreams regardless.

The GL side of this story was very cute but there was no kiss and it was more like cute feelings between two girls but there definetely was romance although it isn't the center of the story.

3/5 stars

I binged some GL this week!

Here are my short reviews:

She makes my heart flutter (2022)

Cozy Korean drama surrounding an aunt and a nice working in a lesbian bar.
I love how the importance of lesbian community is higlighted in this drama.
I'ts a very warm-hearted drama with friendship and romance.

Girlfriend Project Day 1 (2022)

Korean GL. Fake dating! Shy girl and an outgoing girl get together for a school project.
They end up spending a night together! I loved this!

Touch (2023)

Australian web drama. Sports and jealousy. The lead actors are hot and have great chemistry.
Overall great acting and great drama! There was also a lot of great comedy in this.
I really hope for a second season!

Legend of Yunze (2021)

Chinese cultivation GL. The pair is one silent disciplined girl and the other one is a happy-go-lucky puppy type. I love their dynamic! This is a very adventurous drama. I absolutely loved this! Only thing I disliked is that the episodes are quite short, so this was a quick watch.

haitangkitty: (Default)

The anime just finished and I followed it from the very beginning when the first episode aired. I went to it without reading the light novel it's based on, but I'll definetely check them now! This is my first GL anime and it's been quite popular and for a good reason.

Here's some things I liked about it:

- Episode structure: Each episode has it's own well-written plot, unlike some other anime I've been watching recently that hasn't had very strong episode structure. It kept me interested in the story!
- Magical academy: Feels nostalgic because the first gl's I read when I was young were set at all-girl boarding schools (although the one in wataoshi isn't stricktly for girl's only)
- Class conflict: The people are divided into nobles and commoners. There is also an commoner uprising and lot of classism in the story but it is actually discussed and confronted which I found suprising. I think the story will dive deeper into this later.
- One-sided love: Rae is a full on simp for Claire without expecting her to return her feelings. She's like a fangirl who idolizes her crush and keeps herself distant because the possibility of a relationship seems unrealistic. She is only confronted by this in the last episode by a love rival, which I really loved! It also feels realistic portrayal of queer women to have crushes and expect nothing back and just convincing yourself that if they're happy their love interest is happy. It's such a destructive and masochistic way of thinking. Both Rae and Claire evolve during the story although at the heart of their ship is their cat-and-mouse dynamic.

It's been now two years that I've been into BL and I've always had interest in GL but there were some reasons I didn't get into the genre:
- school girls: i'm usually not interested in romance that has minors (in BL as well)
- friends-to-lovers: again i'm not into this in BL either but this seems to be very common in GL. I'm mostly into enemies to lovers.

Some years ago I read two GL's: Citrus and Bloom Into You. Those are considered one of the most popular ones but sadly they weren't my thing so I stayed away from the whole genre. Although I'm a queer woman I've never really got the wholesome girls being in love because that doesn't reflect my reality or it isn't what I dream about. My favorite GL is The Handmaiden so i like more mature and kinky works especially with fantasy or historical setting. This year I was also happy to find a new favorite f/f ship from the fantasy show the House of the Dragon.

This year I've been getting into GL again and have found some mature stuff I like, mainly manwha from Lezhin:

- Bad thinking diary: my absolute favorite! it has jealousy, love triangles and a beautiful art style
- Kill Switch: more lesbian love triangles and jealousy. Love interest a cool biker girl
- Talk Dirty To Me: kpop idols and bdsm
- Spiteful Affection: omegaverse!
- I'm More Dangerous Than You: this one is on bilibili. It's an author student x serial killer teacher and my second favorite GL I've read from this list
- My girlfriend's not here today: love triangles and cheating. I also love the art style.

Anime

- I'm in love with the villainess: this is my new favorite historical fantasy isekai. The love seems onesided at first but it's what i actually like
- Stardust Telepath: this has cute character design and it's a bit too cutesy for my taste but I still find myself watching the newest episode
- The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady: another historical fantasy isekai. I've only watched like 4 episodes but i like it so far.
+ Madoka Magica: not technically GL and it has school girls but they are badass and the show gets suprisingly angsty for a magical girl anime. I love how female friendship is at the center of it.

GagaOOLala

I've been watching a lot of lesbian short films as well as some feature films like Girl's Encounter. Lot of them are bittersweet or just sad but it seems to be that case with a lot of lgbtq+ films.

In conclusion, I read less GL than BL but that doesn't mean I care less about the works I read/watch. That being said I won't turn away from GL anymore and I'm open to discovering the genre more.
